The meeting coincides with the 400th anniversary of the city of Gothenburg. The first Congress was held in Lund in 1905, and since then it has circulated between different universities in the Nordic countries. Gothenburg has previously hosted the meeting in 1923 and 1951.

The main organisers are the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Gothenburg, the Swedish Historical Association and the Nordic Committee for Historians in collaboration with the City of Gothenburg, the Unit of Economic History and the Department of Literature, History of Ideas, and Religion at the University of Gothenburg.

The main theme of the 2022 Congress is ‘Global and local’ and the keynote speakers are Professor Maya Jasanoff, Harvard University (USA) and Professor Poul Holm, Trinity College Dublin (Ireland). The congress theme emphasises the connections that have existed and still exist between the global and the local and how these have influenced and keep influencing each other; notably this has been a distinctive element in the history of the host city. Approaches that link the global and local to each other are important, both historiographically and politically.

We invite you to a four-day scholarly exchange where both empirical results and theoretical and methodological issues related to the conference theme will be presented and discussed. In addition to the main theme, the Congress will also provide ample space for presentations of other research produced by Nordic historians or by non-Nordic historians working on Nordic history. The conference is organised in the form of plenary lectures as well as roundtable discussions, thematic sessions and individual presentations.

The call for papers closed on 1 February 2022 and a complete conference programme can be found here.
